AAC&U

AAC&U is the leading national association concerned with the quality, vitality, and public standing of undergraduate liberal education. Its more than 1,300 member institutions are committed to extending the advantages of a liberal education to all students, regardless of academic specialization or intended career. SHEEO

The national association of state higher education leaders who serve statewide coordinating and governing boards or other state-level higher education agencies, SHEEO seeks to advance public policy and educational practices to achieve widespread access and successful participation in higher education at state and national levels. What is the MSC?

The MSC seeks to create a scalable way to assess essential knowledge and skills based on student coursework, rather than standardized tests or surveys.

Participating institutions collect samples of student work from existing course assignments, which they upload into Aqua by Taskstream. The system distributes the work to faculty at other institutions for scoring with the AAC&U VALUE rubrics.

The pilot year in 2015 included nearly 70 institutions in 9 states. In 2016, the MSC expanded to include 12 states and over 100 institutions. In the Refinement Year (2016-2017), the project includes 13 states: Connecticut, Indiana, Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Oregon, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.

MSC Workflow with Aqua

Technology

Pilot participants in the MSC were among the first to use Aqua by Taskstream. Aqua acts as a central repository for the student work samples and offers a streamlined scoring experience for faculty trained to score the work using the AAC&U VALUE rubrics.
