Typically faculty members across disciplines have experience teaching and assessing learning outcomes such as critical thinking and written communication. But many creative programs include learning outcomes that can be judged only by experts in that field. In our experience, campus community members often misunderstand the assessment process for these fields, especially creative fields such as the arts. Non-experts tend to write off learning outcomes in those disciplines as being “totally subjective”, but experts tend to have very clear criteria for judging student works and tend to have agreement on the quality of student works. This poster presentation aims to clear up this misunderstanding by providing
examples from arts disciplines.
