The student experience of higher education is often disconnected. Students move among campuses, take dozens of classes that seem unrelated to one another (despite our insistence that they work towards common outcomes), and complete a host of assignments with, at best, a rough draft but no subsequent thought or point of connection. Our system is built to function in silos and we rarely question the points of misalignment. Does the student experience have to be like that? Does our assessment?
Building from their book, Degrees that Matter, Natasha Jankowski and David Marshall will explain why the correct answer to those questions is “NO!” Based on research from more than 800 institutions, Natasha and David will explain how a learning systems paradigm has emerged to help advance a more integrated and connected educational experience for students.
Four elements make up the paradigm: it is consensus-based, aligned, learner-centered, and communicated. Together, the four parts of the paradigm have big implications for how we think about assessment of learning in higher education; shifting how we work in higher education and, as a result, how we assess student learning.
In this webinar, participants will learn about the paradigm and how it can inform shifts in perspectives on assessment. They will also learn with whom we might be working to assess the success of both students and programs. Further, the webinar will examine the use of assignments as the bedrock of strong student learning.
