Impacting assessment & faculty growth: Embry-Riddle's success using student feedback to support continuous improvement
Kimberly Brantley Senior Research Analyst Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Utilizing Course Evaluations & Surveys (formerly EvaluationKIT) since 2009

In this interview series, we talk to higher education professionals about their experience with Watermark and how they’re using our tools to make an impact on their campus. Hear from Kimberly Brantley, Senior Research Analyst at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, as she shares how her team is building stronger programs and supporting instructor growth with Watermark Course Evaluations & Surveys.

What has your experience been like working with Watermark?

My experience with Watermark has been fantastic, especially with the support team.  I’ve been managing course evaluations for 16 years, and sometimes I get too close to a problem. When that happens, I just call and say, “Can you walk me through this?” The team is great at helping me see the big picture and solve the issue. Their clarity and professionalism have always been incredibly helpful.

How does using Watermark help your institution tell your story?

Watermark helps us tell our story through assessment. We’ve been able to gather indirect measures of assessment through course evaluations.  When programs want to report on their outcomes, I integrate those into course evaluations, collect the data, and generate reports that help them narrate their story.

What are the top three benefits your institution has experienced from using Course Evaluations and Surveys?

Flexibility and Ease of Use: We can create and copy projects easily, even with all the targeted surveys and nuances. It’s efficient and saves time, especially when things get busy.

Data for Assessment: The ability to collect indirect measures and add course-specific questions with targeted surveys helps us meet program assessment needs.

User-Friendly Interface: Faculty only access the platform a couple of times a year, so it has to be intuitive. The ease of logging in, pulling reports, and interacting with data is a huge benefit.

Can you share a little more about how using Watermark is affecting faculty development?

Course evaluations are traditionally used just for tenure and promotion. At Embry-Riddle, we’re shifting that mindset. Evaluations should support course improvement and teaching development. Faculty can now add custom questions to get insights that help redesign their courses or confirm what’s working. It’s powerful to see it used as a tool for lifelong learning, for students and faculty alike.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your experience?

Overall, my experience with Watermark has been extremely positive. Everybody from the help center to the customer support to the marketing folks have been very supportive.

The ability for us to generate reports and tell our story has been very empowering for our university, for our faculty and our administrators.

The ability to customize those evaluations to what we need them to be is also a very powerful tool that we’ve been able to use for our storytelling.

I’m also excited about the new features Watermark is rolling out, especially their interactive reporting and AI-based qualitative comment summaries. Faculty have been excited about those, and I can’t wait to see where things go from here.
