NEW YORK— October 29, 2019–Watermark, a pioneer in educational intelligence, is pleased to welcome one of its newest partners, Pearland K12 Independent School District (ISD), located in Pearland, TX. Focused on student success and using data to drive meaningful improvements, Pearland ISD plans to implement Watermark for its ability to increase efficiencies and support the growth of students.
The district plans to leverage Watermark to break down data silos at the institution, reduce redundancy and time spent on manual processes, assess performance in a more meaningful way, and provide longitudinal transparency around goals, outcomes, and results from one centralized location. Pearland will use Watermark to support course-based assessment, as well as implement ePortfolios to assess student growth and increase college readiness. By implementing Watermark’s outcomes assessment solution, Pearland can:
- provide students with an opportunity to track their own academic growth, both inside and outside the classroom.
- collect more relevant data, using rubrics for multiple assessment points and aligning those assessments to both outcomes and state standards, such as TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge Skills), for integrated assessment reporting.
- generate data reports that will increase transparency and help the district demonstrate evidence of learning and outcomes improvement.
With Watermark, students have the opportunity to curate and manage multiple portfolios that include a variety of sample works, which serve to demonstrate progress toward goals and skill acquisition. Students can receive real-time feedback from teachers and easily showcase their learning journeys, demonstrating both their academic growth and college readiness.
In addition, Pearland can leverage Via by Watermark’s deep integration with Canvas, the district’s Learning Management System, to create direct links between assignments in Canvas and Via so that students can submit work once, and faculty can access and grade work once, right from within Canvas – eliminating the need for any duplicative work. With an assessment that integrates with its LMS and Student Information System, the district can now better track cohorts of students as they progress through each grade, using this data to help students continue to improve their performances.
“For us at Pearland, it’s about educating the kids. We’re excited to use Via by Watermark to create even richer learning activities that align our learning outcomes to multiple measures. Watermark will be vital in our ability to assess student learning and gather meaningful data that will allow us to improve both student outcomes and instructional design. We’ll be able to report on these outcomes and integrate it with course and other assessment data, like test scores, to present a more holistic picture of learning. The opportunity for our faculty and other instructional personnel to create assessments and view targets, goals, outcomes, and results will be a fantastic step in representing what we as a district have achieved and how we work to put students first,” said Greg Bartay, Chief Technology Officer for Pearland ISD.
“We’re honored to partner with Pearland Independent School District, and we strongly support the district’s focus on student success and college preparation. We look forward to helping the district gather the data needed to not only demonstrate outcomes improvement, but also track student learning in a more meaningful way so they can continue making the kind of improvements that positively impact students,” said Kevin Michielsen, CEO of Watermark.
Pearland’s first school, built in 1893, was a one-room wood structure with a wood-burning stove and 23 students. More than a century later, the district has 23 campuses, 1,364 teachers, and more than 21,500 students. Its comprehensive K-12 academic program provides students the opportunity to reach their full potential and includes special programs, bilingual/English as a Second Language, Gifted and Talented, and pre-K services. With the State Board of Education-approved Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), the entire K-12 curriculum has real-life application and integrates technology. The district also has an extensive Career and Technical Education program that makes connections with the business community.
With Watermark as its partner, Pearland ISD is poised to strengthen its continuous improvement efforts at all levels.
