Should college faculty collect information on class attendance?

It may seem like an inherent notion that a student’s attendance is a direct reflection of their ability to persist through their program of choice. Attendance may not appear to initially impact retention rates, but what we do with the knowledge of this indicator has a momentous impact on student success. The information attendance data provides can arguably be one of the most important pieces in understanding student success.

Attending class provides students with one of the easiest ways to influence their successful completion of a course and degree. In this report, we discuss how we know that class attendance improves student academic outcomes.
