Carolina Works Evaluation Brief

March 10, 2022

An Early Look at the Benefits of Proactive Success Coaching on Student Retention

Technology-mediated advising or coaching is a popular strategy that’s helping better support students. Watermark (formerly Aviso Retention) partnered with a cohort of 10 Colleges and embarked on a First-in-the-World (FITW) federal evaluation of Success Coaching. This consortium of institutions is actively proving that proactive Success Coaching Strategies, when applied to a treatment group of students, leads to increased completion and retention. Preliminary results from the Carolina Works Study indicate that:

  • Success Coaching has a positive impact on students’ retention
  • The benefits of coaching merge over time - with stronger effects on longer-term than shorter-term retention outcomes
  • Key coaching practices appear to be particularly effective in improving these student outcomes
